We want to hear your thoughts on the future of the top of South Street. This survey is an opportunity for you to share your ideas, concerns and suggestions about how this space could be transformed in the long term. While our proposal includes an initial thought starter to help spark discussion, nothing has been decided and all options are open. We welcome creative ideas, practical feedback and alternative approaches that reflect what the community would like to see. If you would like to be more involved, you can also leave your contact details and let us know if you have any skills, experience or expertise that you’d be happy to contribute as the project develops.
Residents were asked to comment on two options for changing vehicle access at the top of South Street: Proposal 1, which would close one side of the triangle to restrict access, and Proposal 2, which would fully pedestrianise the upper section by closing access from Norfolk Road and South Street and rerouting vehicles via Duke Street and Pat Midgley Lane. The results show overwhelming support for taking action, with 95.9% of respondents favouring change. Proposal 1 received the strongest immediate backing (47.3%), largely due to its perceived practicality and lower disruption, while Proposal 2 also attracted significant support (40.5%), particularly from those who see its potential to reduce antisocial behaviour and create a more pedestrian-friendly and greener space.
